Upside carefully matches young people who have been identified as needing a consistent adult in their life with screened community volunteers to be their mentor. The journey together is over 12 months meeting every week. Upside provides on-going support to the mentoring pair throughout the year, with our Mentoring Coordinators conducting regular supervision meetings. We also run events including an annual camp, Beach Day, a Christmas event and school term events such as Clip n Climb and Tramp for everyone involved, including families.

To support the mentoring matches, a koha is paid to the mentors who need financial support to undertake the weekly meetings. This cost on average is $1,250 per month or $15,000 per year and the funding from the John Ilott Charitable Trust has contributed towards these costs.

The grant was spent on reimbursing our mentors for their transport or petrol costs, activities costs and entry fees, and food and beverage costs during the weekly hangouts with their young person.

Over the past 12 months Upside has supported volunteer mentors, and then carefully matched them with young individuals aged 9-13 years who have been facing daunting challenges. These young people have all shared the courage to welcome a mentor into their lives, opening the door to a life-changing bond. For a minimum of two hours a week, across a full year, these amazing young people have spent time with their mentors at beaches, parks, cafes and in kitchens across Auckland. Witnessing the impact of having someone genuinely believe in our young people is nothing short of extraordinary with:
- 97 mentoring matches supported
- 1,366 mentoring catch ups
- 4,411 volunteer hours contributed

This grant has contributed by directly supporting our mentors ensuring that the match has the best experiences resulting in long-term positive outcomes for our young people.

ā€œI am very blessed to have my mentor because he is so clever and wise, and helps me with real life things. I have done a lot of things and learnt a lot of things since having a mentor. I hope I get to be with my mentor for a long time.ā€ - 10 yr old boy

ā€œThank you for everything you have done for me, for being there, understanding me, sheltering me all the time. Thank you!ā€ - 12 yr old girl’s message to her mentor

ā€œI’ve seen [my son] grow so much [because of his mentor]. He used to hold things back but he tends to express himself more. He’s less aggressive towards his younger sister. His teacher emailed me to say his behaviour has improved a lot!ā€ - Mother of 9 yr old boy

ā€œThank you for helping my son find his potential and giving him opportunities he wouldn’t have received if he wasn’t with Upside. I [hope] all whanau [in] this programme get the same amazing results we have.ā€ – Mother of 12 yr old boy

Upside Youth Mentoring would like to say a huge chur to John Ilott Charitable Trust for all the support of our community mentoring programme. This grant has ensured we have supported vulnerable young people across Auckland and through their match, brought positive experiences and outcomes in their lives.

Assist with the production, printing and posting of the CF News Magazine

Interview costs for a story, production and distribution of the CF News magazine which is produced three times a year and distributed to all people living with Cystic Fibrosis in your region

It was extremely helpful as our other funder that we apply for help with CF News costs The Grummit sisters Charitable Trust awarded considerably less funding this year due to the amount of requests they had. We really appreciate your support. Our members find the magazine to be extremely valuable as it is full of tips to cope with the daily relentless toll living with CF takes on the individual, their whanau and family. it contains updates on global research, medications etc., and is full of inspirational stories. CF can be isolating so the magazine also helps contribute to a sense of 'belonging' to the CF NZ community

The Grant of $1000 was to support the cost of our printer lease and associated costs at our Head Office in Porirua

The entire grant was spent on the printer lease. This support was very helpful.

La Leche League NZ (LLLNZ) supports some 90 volunteers and thousands of pregnant mothers and their whanau around New Zealand. Maintaining the Head Office facilities, in particular the printer facility, has allowed us to maintain our services, printing leaflets, pages, pamphlets that have been distributed through our Administrator. The printer is essential to our continued operation and the grant funding from the John Ilott Foundation has been greatly appreciated.

This grant went towards the delivery of our Stars programme. Stars helps to bridge the social gaps for Year 9s first starting our in Secondary school. By nuturing relationships between Year 9 rangatahi and their carefully selected Peer Mentors we see confidence and resilience grow in our Year 9s, ultimately setting them off on a positive academic and social Secondary School pathway and experience.

Fundign specifically went towards teh salary of our Programme Coordinator Cathy Tia. The Programme Coordinator salary is the most significant programme cost, so fundign towards this cost was much appreciated. Born and raised in Porirua, Cathy has a credible understanding of the values and people of our community, and her working career has been a collection of working with individuals and groups facilitating training, recovery programmes, teacher aiding, and most recently as a truancy officer. With a diploma in life coaching, her passion is to support and guide and motivate people to follow their unique goals, find purpose and balance.

This funding contributed to the delivery of the Stars prgoramme at Porirua College and Tawa College at the end of 2022. Term four saw the graduation of over 400 rangatahi (both Year 9s and their Peer Mentors) from the programme from both schools. Cathy, Programme Coordinator, was thrilled with the progress that these young people made by the end of the year. "We've had fantastic mentors who have grown in confidence, resilience and helped the year 9 students navigate their transition to college." Ultimately this fudning has enabled us to continue to work towards our goal of helping our young people to reach their full potential.
