The funds received were for drama tuition of the Many Hats Theatre Company, a group of intellectually disabled adults who are supported by SkillWise, in Christchurch. Their tutor, Paul McCaffrey, teaches the group a wide range of theatrical techniques, creative writing skills, and the development of storylines for 6 hours every Friday.
In order to develop the potential within the group, Paul helps the performers explore and express things that are important to them, an approach to theatrical performance that is designed to give a voice to marginalised sections of our community. It offers the Many Hats members a facility to develop that voice and a place to tell their unique stories. The group creates material that comes from their own perspective, that reflects their life experiences of living with disabilities. This contributes to the creation of a unique part of Aotearoa New Zealand culture that is often untold, and enables people with disabilities to see themselves represented on stage.
Funding was spent on the tuition fees of SkillWise’s theatre company, Many Hats. Tuition was provided by Paul McCaffrey who specialises in teaching drama to adults with intellectual disabilities. The tuition period covered by the application was 6 hours every Friday, for February and March ’23.
The John Ilott Charitable Trust grant has benefitted our organisation by enabling the members of Many Hats to participate in an activity that has many long-term benefits. The drama classes provide them with an inclusive environment where they work together to create a series of theatrical vignettes and sketches with ideas from their own perspective and experiences. Developing the storylines and scripts gives them an opportunity to express their creative ideas, improve their literacy and comprehension skills, and further develop their communication skills. Working together also helps them to learn the skills of collaboration, cooperation, and team effort. Lastly, performing the productions live to audiences from the community improves their verbal skills and enhances their self-confidence. All of these outcomes are hugely beneficial by enabling the Many Hats members to participate in community life and experience activities and opportunities that might otherwise not be available to them.
As for the wider community, the opportunity to attend a live performance of disabled actors is very rewarding. It gives them a different perspective of people’s abilities and talents, and helps to break down preconceived attitudes and prejudices. As the stories told by the actors reflect their life experiences, they can be very eye-opening for the non-disabled audiences and lead to greater understanding of the challenges of living with a disability.

Subsidising assessments of Specific Learning Disability.
Every family receives a subsidy, with further subsidies for those on low incomes. Subsidies are charged on a sliding scale and vary depending on client circumstances and the type of assessment required. $2000 provided basic subsidies for approximately 20 children.
An assessment identifies the student's difficulties and the best strategies for intervention, and is the first step towards experiencing success in their education and future life. Many of the students assessed are from families who are struggling financially, and the initial cost can often be a barrier to these children receiving the help they need. The grant helped ensure that assessments remain accessible to everyone who needs them.

Yearly cost to start and support one mentoring match
Mentor coordinator wages
With your funding we trained our volunteer, found a suitable match and gave regular ongoing support to ensure the success and longevity of the relationship. Thank you! Please find a recent story about the match supported below (name's removed for confidentiality reasons):
Amy (our mentor coordinator) met with the mentor as they had just reached their one year anniversary and we celebrated that with them.
In the referral for the child it was mentioned that she really struggled with her Dad not being around/not keeping his word on seeing her, and with seeing her siblings spend time with their fathers.
During Amy's conversation with the mentor she asked if the mentee had spoken about her dad at all recently. Her mentor said that she had told her that Dad had mentioned visiting her over the holidays but "he lied and didn't come" and then she said "but that's ok, because I know that you will always turn up" to her mentor.
We just wanted to share this little snippet of joy as it's been so incredible watching the bond between those two grow and the mentee saying that to her mentor really shows that this opportunity is starting to show her that people will make an effort for her.

To contribute to the costs of the psychological assessments for the volunteer men who want to become Big Buddies to the boys on our waiting lists who do not have father figures in their lives.
All volunteer Big Buddies are required to undergo a professional psychological assessment along with training and the support and contact from our Big Buddy Mentoring Managers is ongoing.
In 2019 we commissioned Horizon Surveys to conduct a comprehensive survey with mums, caregivers and Big Buddies. 85% of the mums and caregivers reported a definite improvement in self-confidence and significant improvements in happiness, inspiration, improved communication, mental health and a positive outlook on life. This benefits everyone in our community.

Fund volunteer travel to our National Hui and Training Weekend held in October 2022 (delayed from May 22 due to the pandemic).
Volunteer travel to our National Hui and Training Weekend held in Christchurch on October 28-30, 2022. Your support paid for flights for 7 volunteers from West Auckland (2), Invercargill, New Plymouth (2) and Dunedin (2).
Our National Hui and Training Weekend brought together just under 70 volunteer leaders from 23 Bellyful branches across the motu. This weekend was about connection, wellbeing, resilience and providing effective training for our volunteers. The pandemic had forced the cancellation of our 2020 training weekend, and this Hui was the first time we had gathered collectively since 2018. Feedback from the weekend showed the personal, practical and working benefits to hosting the volunteers en mass. In the weeks since the Hui we have noticed a significant uptake in engagement and collaboration between branches, and branch leadership teams. Volunteer leaders are reinvigorated and have brought this back to their branches, new leaders have stepped up into the roles, celebrating this year’s achievements and planning for 2023 is well underway. We could not have done this without the support of funders such as John Ilott Charitable Trust. Volunteers did not have to pay to attend the Hui, with all flights, accommodation and food paid for with grants, sponsorship and donations. We are extremely grateful for the ongoing support from John Ilott Charitable Trust, especially as we work to support whānau recovering from the pandemic.

The grant was for the purpose of supporting women re-entering the workforce via our Careers Assistance Project.
The grant was used for a contribution towards personnel costs [attributed to a portion of the Manager's wages as itemised in our project cost budget with the 2021 application], as well as some marketing and administration for the project.
The grant enabled us to directly support around 25 women with employment applications, compiling and updating CVs, active support for work readiness and confidence, and the provision of work wardrobe items. Many of the women that we supported had been out of the workforce for some time and often had limited access to the resources needed to feel work ready. In delivering our Careers Assistance Project we were able to increase participation in the workforce, improved self-confidence, and a sense of personal purpose, thanks to the generous support of this grant.
