Project overview

Name of the project

Offspring Playgroup

Purpose of the project and the expected outcomes

Offspring playgroup helps children develop physically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. Fine and gross motor skills are grown using large movement equipment such as slides, trampolines, ball pits and fine skills using painting, drawing, play doe and brick building blocks. Social skills are developed through cooperative play, sharing, music dance and songs. Te reo is used where possible to support Maori children, parents and caregivers. Parenting skills are supported by provision of evidence based resources and a qualified counsellor is available for advice in both sessions each week.

Who are your beneficiaries or who will benefit from this project

Parents and caregivers and children from all over Levin, comprising a full range of socio-economic backgrounds and ethnicities. Parents and caregivers interact with each other in a hall space with lounge seats, coffee, tea and food manaakitanga. Muffin mix is provided to take home.
Volunteers benefit from the sense of belonging provided to all. The paid facilitator benefits from skill development and income.

When are the expected outcomes realised?

We have on average 23 children plus caregivers and parents on a Tuesday and an average of 15 children plus caregivers and parents on a Thursday. We run for 40 weeks per year and have over a hundred children enrolled each year. Total attendees (children) per year is approximately 1520 visits. Parents and caregiver visits will be around the 1000 mark per year. We are Ministry of Education approved.

Is it ongoing project?

Yes

Please advise when it started and when it is expected to finish

This project started in 2004 and is expected to continue. We have a volunteer pool that is staying consistent and it is hoped will expand as more effort is being put into the engagement of parents and caregivers in leadership and serving roles. This diocesan report attached is for the whole Wellington diocese of which we have no financial benefit from. Our Levin parish runs its own community ministries out of its own resources including, hall use, equipment use, support of facilitator wages. Unfortunately the local church is elderly and unable to resource fully the costs of the playgroup.

Total amount requested

Less than $5000

Less than the maximum amount

$3000 This is an increase of 50% as we are likely to have a temporary shift of venue due to building strengthening.
